The scientific society and education
2010 marks the 200th anniversary of a university idea which not only the Berlin science scene but also universities worldwide are committed to: Humboldt’s idea that university must be a place not merely to educate people for a particular profession but also to become well-rounded individuals. Following this idea universities have a key role in the development of society: An educative process was initiated in which the individual was trained to assimilate the world and with it, responsibility for the whole of humankind.
Globalisation demands worldwide cooperation among scientists and scholars both to guarantee continued research success as well as to facilitate the orientation and mutual understanding of global citizens. In the face of ever more complex questions, research has to be interdisciplinary.
We can only respond adequately to the continual changes in forms of work and activity if students take responsibility for their own learning. Therefore, it is crucial for a future-oriented education to guarantee a high performance education system tailored to individual needs.
